These 192 Pokémons created by an artificial intelligence will make you a nightmare
Born in 1996, Pokémon still dominate a series of entertainment sectors today (movies, game cards, video games, toys, t-shirts, etc.) with one of the most lucrative franchises in the world. Artistically, the Pokémon universe has remained a real source of inspiration for many artists. And with an official Pokédex (the official catalog) consisting of 898 creatures, the saga has grown steadily since the 90s. Note that what is quite remarkable is the continued ability of those who design them to come up with new ideas again and again.
But today a new actor is involved. Artificial intelligence (AI) gets involved and brings its own ability to imagine and create its own Pokémon. It was an Internet user, Max Woolf, data scientist at Buzzfeed, who had the idea of allowing an AI to record all the official portraits of existing Pokémon, in the form of a cadastre and directory, in order to be able to digest all the parameters of the existing Pokémon, before asking him to generate 192 random Pokémon with the acquired data.
In short, an AI to generate new creatures from old ones. The result is quite surprising since these new creatures are not necessarily based on existing creatures on Earth, a reflex that has often been found among the creators of historical and traditional Pokémon.
But based on the creatures that already exist in the Pokémon world, these newcomers, with an almost extraterrestrial and totally unexpected appearance, have greatly pleased Internet users. Packed by the positive reactions, Max Woolf has even created others based solely on the first generation of Japanese star creatures, such as Pikachu or Charizard.
