Tesla assesses the drivers before giving access to her autonomous driving in beta 🆕 |Macgeneration
As promised for several months by Elon Musk, Tesla has finally activated the button which allows any American driver to request access to the beta of fully autonomous driving, or FSD for "Full Self Driving".As a reminder, the company has been working for almost a year on the brand new version of its autopilot, capable of driving its cars without human intervention - but under the constant supervision of the driver - everywhere, including in town.
The first public tests of this beta date back to the fall of 2020 and Elon Musk continues to announce its enlargement over the months since.Still reserved for a handful of testers in the United States, the FSD beta can now be requested by any driver of a compatible car, that is to say a vehicle released from 2016 to a few exceptions.Asking is one thing, but getting it is another. D’une part, seuls ceux qui ont payé l’option FSD1, vendue actuellement 10 000 $ ou à l’abonnement à 200 $ par mois, peuvent espérer bêta-tester cette nouvelle version de la conduite autonome.
On the other hand, only responsible drivers will be able to access the beta. All those who choose to click on the button displayed on the screen of their Tesla agree to be noted on 100, according to the Safety Score set up by the company. He also described as beta, this score assesses the driver's behavior according to five criteria to obtain a note, between 0 for the worst behavior and 100 for the safest drivers.
The five criteria listed by Tesla are:
A mathematical formula is applied to each criterion to weigh them according to their importance and offer a total score.Drivers who get a score of 100 have never had a frontal collision alert, never held out brutally or took a turn too quickly, they have always respected the safety distances and have never driven the autopilotto deactivate. This score is measured for each day with at least one journey, but the value indicated by the app is an average over thirty days which takes into account the distance traveled.
This new score is used to determine who will be able to access the FSD beta, but if its calculation is explained in a transparent way, the rules of access are obscure.Elon Musk said that the seven -day score must be good enough to be able to claim beta, without giving the figure to reach. Is it 80/100, the threshold indicated on the explanation page as that of the majority of drivers?By not committing to any value, the company keeps its hand and can select whoever it wants without having any accounts to be rendered.
Besides, this button to participate in the beta will allow it to collect an impressive amount of information on its customers.Tesla cars are always connected and multiple data go back to the manufacturer's servers, but they are not exploited ... except for all those who want to access the beta. And since the admission criteria are not known, Tesla can collect this data without offering anything in return.
For the moment, these functions only concern the United States. In Europe, the Tesla autopilot is limited by current and much more rudimentary regulations, so that the FSD beta could not be offered, even if that does not prevent the manufacturer from carrying out tests on the continent.Likewise, this driving score is only calculated for American drivers, it is not used in Europe.
Update on 09/28/2021 09:20: Elon Musk clarified the modalities on Twitter, indicating that the first days, only drivers with a perfect score of 100 points will have access to the beta. The deployment will start if all goes well with the beta 10.2 scheduled for next week. From there, the company plans to add approximately a thousand beta-tters per day, with the driving score as a priority order.
Another point which was specified by the owner of Tesla recently: this driving score should serve as part of the insurance that the company should offer from next month in Texas. This is another old promise of Elon Musk, constantly delayed, which could finally be materialized, knowing that insurance prices are very high in the United States for owners of the brand vehicles.
The FSD already exists in Tesla cars, but the "stable" version is limited to highways and roads outside the cities.Beta focuses on autonomous driving in town, even if it has to improve it everywhere and also on highways.↩︎
