The Polisario Front threatens Binter for its service in Western Sahara
The Polisario Front threatens to file a complaint against the Spanish airline Binter after the resumption of its service to Laâyoune in Western Sahara, a territory that the independence organization disputes in Morocco.
In a letter addressed this week to the management of Binter, the representative of the Polisario Front in Spain asked the airline to “cease its activity in the Saharawi territories”. "Given that it does not have the endorsement of the Polisario Front, the sole and legitimate representative of the Saharawi people, the programming and marketing of any flight to the occupied cities of Western Sahara constitutes a serious violation of international law, reason for which this company bears international responsibility,” he wrote, threatening Binder with appropriate “legal action.”
It is not the first time that the Polisario Front attacks Binter, a regional company based in the Spanish Canary Islands which serves several destinations in Africa. In 2018, the independence organization had seized, but without success, the European Council to denounce a violation of the airspace of Western Sahara by the companies Binter and Transavia which then served Laayoune and Dakhla.
A former Spanish colony now three-quarters controlled by Morocco, Western Sahara is considered a "non-autonomous territory" by the UN, in the absence of a definitive settlement. Supported by Algeria, the Polisario Front calls for a self-determination referendum, planned by the UN, but constantly postponed since the signing in 1991 of a ceasefire between Morocco and the Polisario Front after sixteen years of conflict . Morocco proposes autonomy under its sovereignty. While the UN-led political settlement process stalls, hostilities between the two sides resumed last year.
