Motorcycle insurance: choice, withdrawal, cost and termination
Why insure your motorcycle?
Like any motorized land vehicle, the motorcycle, regardless of its cubic capacity, is subject to the obligation of civil liability insurance (article 211-1 of the insurance). Lack of insurance is penalized by a fixed fine of 500 euros, which may go up to 3,750 euros depending on the circumstances and in particular in the event of a repeat offense (article L.324-2 of the Highway Code and article 495-17 of the Code of Criminal Procedure). Affixing the insurance certificate to the motorcycle is mandatory.
Except in the case of an accident involving the total responsibility of another road user, any bodily injury suffered by the motorcyclist of his own doing is not compensated if no guarantee for the driver has been taken out ( in the event of death, invalidity, incapacity for work in particular).

How to choose the right motorcycle insurance and guarantees?
The choice of contract and guarantees must be made according to the value of the motorcycle, the frequency of its use, but also according to the pilot's experience. If an experienced and careful driver, driving little, can be satisfied with the compulsory guarantee, a young beginner driver who drives regularly has an interest in taking out damage guarantees:
Good to know: taking out at least one of these 5 optional guarantees systematically entails the benefit of the guarantee for damages in the event of a natural disaster, but also technological disasters, storms and attacks and acts of terrorism .
Depending on contracts and insurers, other guarantees are offered: insurance of motorcycle accessories and equipment (fairing, top case, etc.), but sometimes also of the driver (insurance of helmets, gloves, overalls, jacket, boots).
Cost of motorcycle insurance
The rate applied varies according to the engine capacity (power and value), the age and mileage of the motorcycle, and the guarantees taken out. But we must also take into account certain elements specific to the driver:
Given these criteria, the annual cost of a 125cc motorcycle can vary from 600 to 800 euros.
Case of young drivers
Are considered as young drivers, new motorcyclists who have had a driving license for less than 3 years and who have never been insured. A young driver is subject to a rate increase for a period of 3 years. The degressive surcharge is 100% of the base rate in the first year, 50% in the 2nd year and drops to 25% in the third year.
Good to know: some insurers reserve their cover for sports motorcycles (generally 600cc and above) for riders aged 25 or over.
Motorcycle insurance online
If motorcycle insurance can be taken out locally with a traditional insurance intermediary (general agent, broker or agency of a mutual or bank), online subscription is possible via the site of certain insurers or brokers or through insurance comparators.
Direct insurers or sometimes specialized brokers offer online underwriting. This subscription method sometimes makes it possible to find the best prices on the market, but its use must be reserved for those who, beyond the price, are able to compare the guarantees offered by detecting the weak points of the contracts.
How to cancel your motorcycle insurance?
The formalities to be followed to cancel your motorcycle insurance are the same as for car insurance. Namely according to 3 cases:

Can you withdraw after signing a motorcycle insurance contract?
It is not possible to withdraw. If the law provides for a right of withdrawal for certain types of contracts taken out in well-defined circumstances, the motorcycle insurance contract (even taken out outside an agency, on canvassing or online or by telephone), is part, like all insurance contracts. insurance covering the RC of a motor vehicle, exceptions for which the right of withdrawal does not apply. The 14-day period for contracts concluded at a distance does not apply to a motorcycle insurance contract. In addition, this contract does not fall within the scope of article L121-20-12 of the Consumer Code, which provides that "the consumer has a period of 14 completed calendar days to exercise his right of withdrawal, without having to justify a reason or bear penalties".
