Migros opens unstaffed app-operated store

Residents of Granges (Solothurn) have recently been able to do their shopping without contact. The "Voi Cube", the first unmanned branch of Migros, has just opened, reports local media Grenchner Tagblatt. The cube-shaped convenience store, 18 square meters in area, is accessible 24 hours a day and offers around 500 products.

The “Voi Cube” concept is not, however, a first in Switzerland. The unstaffed mini-market works in fact in a similar way to the store “with box”, launched more than two years ago by the Valora group. To access the self-service mini-market, you have to download a dedicated application which then allows you to enter the small store via a QR code. The scanning of food and other items also goes through the smartphone. When leaving, customers pay at an automatic cashier.

According to the Grenchner Tagblatt, not everything went according to plan on opening day. "Android phones even had problems finding the application in the app store," says the regional daily. And the cash register also experienced technical problems, with the receipt not being able to be printed in some cases. Migros constantly intends to improve its “Voi Cube”, emphasizing that the supermarket in Granges is a prototype.
