'It was a crazy idea': sausages attached to drones save dog's life

A stroll in Hampshire (England) turned into a fiasco on January 13, 2022. Millie fled and found herself trapped in the middle of the mudflats. An unusual rescue operation was therefore launched.
Yes, as surprising as it may seem, you read the title of this article correctly. A pair of flying sausages were observed across the English landscape in early January. How the hell did the rescuers come to imagine such a device?
It's simple. Millie managed to get off her leash on a walk and ran away, much to her owner's chagrin. The pooch, a Jack Russell Terrier / Whippet mix, was finally located several hours later in the middle of the mudflats. A dangerous situation...
Volunteers and rescuers did everything possible to recover the animal in distress. Alas, no one was able to extract poor Millie safely.

“It was a crazy idea”
After 2 days of futile attempts, a light bulb went on above the head of a drone pilot. The latter suggested luring the dog with food. 2 devices each equipped with a sausage floated straight towards the Hampshire Robinson. "It was a crazy idea," said Chris Taylor, president of Denmead Drone Search and Rescue.

Thus, a squadron of flying sausages went to the rescue of the canine. A preposterous scene for any passing walker! However, this unorthodox lure has proven effective.
Millie couldn't resist the tantalizing aroma of meat. Her rescuers managed to move her 300 meters further, to a safe place. "As Millie was hungry, it worked and got her away from danger, to higher ground, which wouldn't go underwater," explained Chris Taylor.

The dog and her mistress were reunited
However, the story did not end with the success of the flying sausages. After eating half of a food item, Millie escaped into the surrounding woods.
Luckily, she was discovered soon after. Once rescued, she found the comforting arms of her owner, reports the New York Post in an article published on January 21, 2022. Millie's adoptive mother said she was extremely relieved.
“It was an unusual rescue – they're not that complicated normally,” Chris Taylor said. This misadventure taught us one thing: never underestimate the appetizing power of sausages!
