Hamilton, a quiet 'distance' from Wolff?
Jacques Villeneuve understands Lewis Hamilton's silence after the great disappointment at the end of the 2021 season. The 1997 World champion felt that the Mercedes F1 driver must find it hard to accept a loss in the final lap to Max Verstappen. However, it expects it to return to its highest level in 2022.
"it depends on the car Mercedes is going to give Hamilton, whether he can win easily with or without it," Villeneuve told Gazzetta dello Sport. "Lewis is also a little more tired."
"he had some easy seasons after Nico Rosberg left and he really won't want to have another year like last season. He thought he could easily bring the record for the eighth title and that didn't happen."
"it's like a diamond that you have in your hands and that's suddenly taken away from you. This way it hurt a lot more than if Verstappen had just led the whole race."
But according to Villeneuve, one of the reasons for the seven times world champion's silence is the desire to be more discreet than his boss at Mercedes, Toto Wolff. The Canadian felt that the latter was too aggressive with the FIA in the face of defeat.
"I also interpret Hamilton's silence as a desire to put distance between him and Wolff. After all, one can lose with style, while Toto behaved like someone who plays monopoly and, at the moment when he loses, throws the whole set into the air. In doing so, Wolff has suffered a lot of damage to his image, in my opinion."?
