ASL: Starter Kit #1 [ASL SK] First contact in Vierville
Thank you Lymon Flowers. It's actually the idea to help those who don't dare (like me for a long time!) to take the plunge.
***
Having been there recently (I was on vacation in Normandy on All Saints Day), Vierville is a very small town located a little south of Sainte-Mère-Eglise (much better known!). INSEE tells us that in 1944, the population was about 85 inhabitants. Either, it was the cultural minute and rest assured, if ASL wants to be a precise system, all this will not impact our scenario. Indeed, apart from historical modules, the game uses generic cards (a hundred at the time when I write these lines, and this just for the official range!) and geomorphic; I let you imagine the number of possible combinations! Another advantage is that there are scenarios of all sizes, from the small village of Normandy to huge cities like Stalingrad or Budapest. It is therefore easy to find a shoe that suits you depending on the space available! Here, we will use part of the "y" map provided in the SK1 and it looks like this! You will notice the small village of Vierville in the center and the D913 which crosses it almost from east to west... almost like in real life !I'm not going to go into details now, but if you know a little about tactical games (or if you have some notions of infantry combat), you will have easily guessed that woods or houses are useful for protect and that it is better to avoid walking in the open. Like any game on this scale, firefights involve lines of sight (Line of Sight, or LOS); certain obstacles (orchards, fields, etc.) interfere with the line of sight and give a penalty to shooting, and certain obstacles (buildings, woods, etc.) completely block it (no shooting possible!). Each terrain also "costs" movement points (here called "Movement Factor", or MF) to enter the hexagon. Note the special case of cereal fields (in yellow) which can be "high" or mowed depending on the season ; here, it's June, the shoots are high, which hinders the lines of sight, slows down the movement... but also partially protects the men who progress through it.Each ASL scenario (presented in the form of a synthetic) offers balancing (adding a unit for this or that camp, special rules, etc.) that I will not use for this first approach. It also gives victory conditions, initial placement, and number of turns to play; here, the Americans position themselves first in the village and the Germans play first by entering from the edges of the map. The latter must have a unit in good order (so neither "broken", nor engaged in melee) in one of the four objective buildings (I marked them with a "V" on the map) and this at the end of the 5 game turns that make up the scenario. What else can I tell you before we begin? North is towards the right edge of the map (in the representation we will have of the battlefield), which is important because the scenario indicates the arrival of reinforcements by the directions of the compass. done the trick, time for action (finally!)!
