5 completely crazy facts about September 11 that you certainly did not know!
The attacks of September 11, 2001 on the World Trade Center shocked and traumatized the whole world! It is also the historical event of the United States which certainly generates the most conspiracy theories. But today, we're going to reveal some pretty crazy details about this disaster, which you probably didn't know.
Plane debris found in alley 11 years later
When the twin towers of the World Trade Center collapsed, large pieces of debris were strewn all over the area in Manhattan. The clean-up operation lasted nine months. In addition to the pieces of concrete and the metal beams that made up the buildings, many objects found in offices ended up in the streets near the buildings. But the most mind-blowing thing is that in April 2013, the landing gear of one of the planes that hit the towers was found in an alleyway three blocks from Ground Zero!
After this discovery, the New York police cordoned off the area and brought in specialists to identify the piece. Thanks to its identification number, the metal object could be identified as belonging to one of the September 11 devices.
Well, the analysis was not necessarily necessary to confirm this since there were no other planes that crashed in this area of Manhattan...
9/11 trademark filings
In the days following the attacks of September 11, 2001, the Trademark Office received a significant number of requests to register a trademark around this tragedy. Thus, some have imagined being able to make money by depositing the date of 9/11 or the term "World Trade Center", just to put that on objects to sell them to tourists...
Unsurprisingly, and fortunately, the office in charge of registering the trademark filing refused all these requests. Indeed, dates cannot be considered as trademarks and thus become someone's property.
End clap for Limp Bizkit's "Rollin" music video
In 2001, Limp Bizkit is a hit! With their new album, the American nu metal band finds itself at the top of the charts, their tour is sold out! The group even won a Video Music Award for the best rock video with the clip of their song "Rollin" shot at the top of the World Trade Center and which is constantly playing on the MTV channel.
Everything was going well for Limp Bizkit until September 11 when after the attacks, the "Rollin" music video was removed from MTV's programming. A perfectly logical decision!
18th century ship discovered under World Trade Center
The attacks on the World Trade Center left a huge hole in the heart of New York City. After having cleared the site, a team of archaeologists decided to carry out some research and in 2010, during excavations made on the southern side of Ground Zero, the researchers discovered old wood. By insisting a little, they were able to update the framework of an old Dutch ship dating from 1770. This one was used to transport passengers on the Hudson until 1790 before being abandoned and sunk to allow reinforcement the shores of Manhattan. But archaeologists have only found the remains of this ten-meter-long ship. They were also able to discover a multitude of objects from the same period such as bones of slaughtered animals, bottles, shoes or even a single human hair on which a lice was still attached!
Ben Sliney, the air traffic controller who decided to close the airspace the day he took office
On the morning of September 11, 2001, Ben Sliney left for his first day on the job as operations manager for the Federal Aviation Administration. He takes his post, gets to know his new colleagues until the moment when we learn that several planes have been hijacked in what seems to be a coordinated attack against the United States. But at this precise moment, no one knows how many of the more than 4,500 aircraft in the sky may pose a real threat.
Sliney decides to alert his officials to ask them for permission to cancel all takeoffs across the country. But no one answers him. Faced with this enormous risk, the man decides to take the decision himself to ask all the planes in flight to divert to the nearest airport. It was an unprecedented closure of American airspace!
After making this decision, Ben Sliney waited for a call from his managers in fear of being fired. Indeed, if he had been wrong, this closure could have cost the American aviation billions of dollars for nothing. But fortunately for him, no one told him anything! The only remark he received was why he had not ordered this closure of the airspace earlier... Never happy with these officials!
