Summary

Checkered flag for the 88th 24 Hours of Le Mans! The most famous double clock on the motorsport planet ended this Sunday, September 20 with the overall victory of the Toyota TS050 Hybrid of the Buemi-Nakajima-Hartley crew. This is the third success in a row for the #8 machine and the third for Sébastien Buemi, who equals his compatriot Marcel Fässler. The Rebellion #1 (Senna-Nato-Mezenes) completed the final podium ahead of the Toyota #7 of the Conway-Kobayashi-Lopez trio.

This 2020 edition of the great Le Mans classic was contested in a mild climate and on a track that remained dry despite forecasts of rain at the start of the weekend. Ideal conditions, despite four interruptions to the safety car, which benefited the Japanese manufacturer which sealed a new success, the last of the hybrid era before the transition to the Hypercar and LMDH categories in 2021. Rebellion held the dragee high in the TS050 throughout the race and was rewarded for his efforts with the second place of the Bruno Senna-Norman Nato-Gustavo Mezenes trio. The #3 of Dumas-Berthon-Deletraz completes the bet for the Swiss team by finishing fourth, about forty seconds behind the #7 Toyota. This one will have long believed to be able to claim the laurels. Fate and mechanics will have decided otherwise, first with overheating of the brakes in the first hours of the race then a turbo failure in the middle of the night.

Of the five LMP1s, one was missing: the valiant ENSO-CLM #4 ByKolles Racing (Dillmann, Spengler, Webb) was indeed forced to retire during the evening. The top 5 is completed by the first representative of the LMP2 class, the #22 United Autosports of Albuquerque, di Resta and Hanson. The end of the race was intense for this crew, chased up to eight minutes from time by JOTA Sport #38. The Davidson-Da Costa-Gonzalez trio, however, had to settle for the first runner-up after a final pitstop, otherwise it would run out of fuel before the flag! The final classification was turned upside down in the last hour. A final safety car closed the gaps but did not benefit the #26 G-Drive Racing. On the way to the podium. Jean-Eric Vergne suffered a broken suspension. The Frenchman and his teammates Roman Rusinov and Mikkel Jensen had to settle for fifth position. The misfortune of some is sometimes the happiness of others, the Oreca #31 of Panis Racing (Canal, Jamin, Vaxivière) inherited the top 3 ahead of the Signatech-Alpine #36 of Laurent, Negrao and Ragues.

Despite a leaner field (eight cars), the fight for victory in GTE Pro was intense from Saturday to Sunday. The #97 Aston Martin Vantage AMR (Lynn, Martin, Tincknell) took overall victory against the #51 AF Corse Ferrari 488 EVO (Calado, Pier Guidi, Serra). The defending champion will have occupied the lead on numerous occasions in an intense sleight of hand game with the Briton, who took advantage of a last decisive pit stop to seal her success. Finally, Aston Martin won the laurels also in the GTE AM category where the crew of the #90 TF Sport (Adam, Eastwood, Yoluc) made the unfortunate Ferraris and works Porsches bite the dust for their anniversary edition.

We are already giving you an appointment on June 12 and 13, 2021 for the 89th edition of the most beautiful race in the world, which you can once again follow live on Auto-Moto!

TV program

This year again, the 24 Hours of Le Mans TV broadcasting system for France gives pride of place to the France Television and Eurosport groups. The first city allows you to visualize the race in clear, up to two-thirds of the event. The departure given on Saturday afternoon can be found on the poster of France 3, which will also be responsible for broadcasting the famous “mancelle night”, with an uninterrupted live broadcast from 12:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. As for Eurosport, the entire race will be broadcast on Eurosport 2, while Eurosport 1 will cover live from the unprecedented hyperpole on Friday. On the other hand, for the day of tomorrow (Thursday), uncertainty hangs over a broadcast of the first free practice. In any case, you can follow them live through our live text on this page.

In recent years, the start of the Le Mans classic was given at 3 p.m. In 2020, you will have to wait half an hour less before witnessing the lowering of the tricolor flag. Indeed, the kick-off of the double clock of the 88th edition will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday September 19. Consequently, the next day, the arrival will also be judged half an hour earlier, at 2:30 p.m.

Tickets closed

The 88th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will not take place as usual, not only because of its postponement from June to September. Indeed, in 2020, the Sarthe classic will be held without an audience. Announced on August 10, this decision was taken by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest and the Sarthe Prefecture, in consultation with various reference bodies in terms of health security. It is the consequence of the persistence of the health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the uncertainty as to the evolution of the situation in France over the coming months.

Until now, the ACO had considered welcoming spectators in limited numbers, through reception areas called “villages”, with a capacity limited to 5,000 spectators. The health protocol included in particular the wearing of a mandatory mask for anyone over the age of 11 and the installation of hydroalcoholic gel dispensers. In the end, that was not enough and the 2020 edition will be contested behind closed doors. The ACO specifies that “ticket holders (general public and ACO members) will be contacted by the ticket office to confirm their credit. »

For its fans, inevitably disappointed at not being able to travel to the Sarthe this year, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest announces that it "will offer them an exceptional system to follow the race, from a distance, with in particular a digital platform to discover behind the scenes of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. »

New date

During the month of March 2020, the acceleration of the health crisis caused by the coronavirus disrupted the calendar of the World Endurance Championship. In less than a week, three official announcements resulted in the cancellation of the 1000 Miles of Sebring, the postponement of the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps to a date not yet defined, then the postponement of the 24 Hours of Le Mans as well. . As the last round of the championship, the Sarthoise classic cannot be held on June 13 and 14. On March 18, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) announced the new dates for the 88th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans: the weekend of September 19 and 20, 2020.

Furthermore, the Le Mans classic is no longer the final of the championship. The last round will take place in November 2020, at the 8h of Bahrain.

On Friday October 18, 2019, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) lifted the veil on the poster for the 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans (before the postponement). During the last edition, it was the GTs that were honored through the legendary duel between Ferrari and Ford. This time, it is an LMP2 which is in the foreground, a way of illustrating the importance of this category which looks like an increasingly dense field from year to year. On this poster, the prototype highlighted is the Alpine A470-Gibson n°36 of the Signatech Alpine team driven by the trio Nicolas Lapierre, André Negrao and Pierre Thiriet, winner of the LMP2 category of the 2019 24 Hours of Le Mans. With the famous number 24 embellished with "futuristic" and "colored" lines as a backdrop, according to the will of the agency Désigne x Pulp, which is behind it.
