RATP: Gare de Lyon station has an artificial intelligence device to streamline traffic

The Autonomous Régie des Transports Parisiens (RATP) has been experimenting since May 25, an AI -based tool at the quays of the Gare de Lyon station on line 14 of the Paris Métro de Paris. This is a flow management assistance system: the objective is to streamline travel on the quays and prevent any risk of strong crowds. For three months, the system will be tested to improve the experience of users of the Paris metro by offering them real -time information and alternative transport solutions.

An increase in traffic on line 14 by 2024

Since December 14, 2020, line 14 has been extended to the north, from Saint-Lazare station, to the town hall of Saint-Ouen.This 5.8-kilometer extension aims to unclog line 13 of the Paris metro, one of the most taken from the network, and which saturates in attendance, especially during peak hours on the section of the two forks to Saint-Denis University andCourtilles.

Line 14 will then be extended to the south, towards Orly airport. At the time of its opening scheduled for 2024, attendance should increase by 50 %, which will bring the total number of daily trips to 1 million on the line.Hence the importance of proposing a system to streamline travel.

An artificial intelligence system to streamline travel

RATP : La station Gare de Lyon se dote d’un dispositif d’intelligence artificielle pour fluidifier le trafic

The device uses the already existing video protection cameras in metro stations, as well as artificial intelligence in order to measure in real time the density of travelers on the quays.A screen will inform users as well as the control station, the crowds in almost real stations and will offer solutions to facilitate the traveler experience. For example, if a user wishes to go to Châtelet from Gare de Lyon, that the quay of line 14 is saturated and that he is in front of the device, this one will offer him an alternative: to take line 1, the RER Aor the RER D.

Several actions will be possible thanks to the implementation of this system in stations to help users and make traffic smoother.Take the case of line 14 and the Gare de Lyon station:

An experiment respectful of personal data

All travelers are informed of this brand new experimentation using a display campaign deployed in the ticket room, metro corridors and Lyon station station on line 14.Users who do not wish to be part of the test may take an alternative course which will be indicated thanks to a dedicated markup. On the platform, a right of opposition law as long as two cars will be available at the end of the quay.

The device uses cameras to count the silhouettes of users in real time. All this is carried out anonymously in order to comply with the regulations on personal data and the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).All the legal and technical elements as well as the information related to the experience were presented to the CNIL which rendered a favorable opinion on the project.
