Netflix: 3 good convincing and atypical series to discover this week

Netflix here, Netflix there... On CNET France, we don't hesitate to talk to you very regularly about the films and series showing on the SVoD platform. Precisely, you were perhaps waiting for it (hopefully), it is here, I have named our weekly selection of programs recommended by the editorial staff.

I Am Not Okay With This, Dérapages or Dead to Me... even if these three series are not the best on Netflix, they should guarantee you good moments in front of your screen. Here's why.

What nice series to watch or see again on Netflix this week?

An amazing series: I Am Not Okay With This7.6/10

In brief

Sydney is a special teenager, even if she doesn't know it yet. For the time being, she must reconcile a family life that is not always easy with her daily life in high school and her chaotic love affairs. But that's not all, the young woman also has astonishing powers lying dormant within her...

The opinion of CNET France

An intriguing and surprising series, in the line of the very successful The End of The F***ing World. With seven twenty-minute episodes only, I Am Not Okay With This chooses a format that is increasingly rare in the world of series. Inevitably, it's a little too short for our taste, even if the series unfolds its story quietly, without taking too many shortcuts.

The adaptation of Charles Forsman's comics is well done, his universe is interesting and well constructed. The first season sets the scene and the atmosphere before a season 2 which will not be too much. Even if the first seven episodes are successful, they first resonate as an introduction and give hope for great things for the future.

The idea is good, the scenario gripping, the characters rather endearing overall, but we are still a little unsatisfied. Nothing dramatic, but a bit more action and twists would have been nice sometimes.

On the other hand, the series has the merit of addressing subjects that will echo the concerns of many teenagers. The heroine asks herself existential questions about her life, her loves, her sexuality... so many themes developed in the subplots of the show.

Otherwise, I Am Not Okay With This has the merit of being original and entertaining. The actors are also nice and deliver a more than correct performance. The series has potential and if season 2 confirms the promises of the first, it should make a remarkable comeback on Netflix.

A gripping drama: Dérapages7.2/10

In brief

Former HR manager laid off by his "too advanced" age, Alain Delambre is no longer coping. At the end of his tether after years of odd jobs and galleys, he loses his nerve and violently attacks his superior at the factory. Verdict: 100,000 euros in damages for the one who is already struggling to repay all his loans.

Hope is finally reborn when he is contacted for a position that perfectly matches his profile. To succeed and obtain the precious sesame, he is ready for anything and will stop at nothing, even when confronted with strange recruitment methods. Then begins a series of unfortunate events and the apotheosis of the descent into hell of a man who has nothing more to lose.

The opinion of CNET France

Dérapages is a series that has the merit of intriguing. Its casting already, with Éric Cantona and Alex Lutz at the top of the bill, has enough to arouse the curiosity of series lovers, always on the lookout for a new nugget to put in their mouths.

Its plot then, well thought out, is inspired by Cadres noirs (Pierre Lemaitre's excellent thriller), without distorting it or copying it too closely. Sometimes, it's true, the whole lacks a bit of relief, the script has a few empty passages and the conclusion could have been more successful.

On the other hand, this does not prevent Dérapages from making a good quality copy. Against a background of social misery and despair, she recounts with subtlety and poignancy the infernal spiral in which Alain Delambre embarks.

His only crime? To have endured too long a life that gave him no gift. So inevitably, when a large company run by a boss with dubious morals makes him dangle an unexpected position, he plunges, without suspecting that he is in fact only a pawn.

But that the fall will be hard when he realizes the deception. Dérapages focuses on the psychology of the character, the accumulation of affronts that will make him crack. Unemployment wreaks havoc, like despair and resignation. This is what the series shows through its main character. Torn between his own darkness and the dilettante hope for a better world, he fights body and soul for his salvation.

The narration of this social thriller is intense, the staging sober but more than enough to create a heavy atmosphere. In the main role, Éric Cantona is solid. We are not always rave about his performances as actors, but in Dérapages, he does the job really well.

Alex Lutz does not disappoint either, the features of the shark Alexandre Dorfmann suit him to delight. Dérapages is a nice surprise and a series that should keep you guessing.

A good comedy-drama: Dead to Me8.1/10

In brief

When Jen Harding loses her husband in a car accident, her life changes for the worse. The widow has a hard time mourning, sadness and anger overwhelm her and threaten to bring her down. It is urgent, she must take control of her life to avoid making the situation even more complicated.

In a therapy supposed to help her get her head above water, she meets the amazing Judy. Very different, the two women will however quickly become friends. But what Jen doesn't know is that Judy is hiding a dark secret that concerns her directly...

The opinion of CNET France

Dead To Me was not a priority in the long list of programs we want to watch. Its first episode was launched without expecting much, even if the feedback on the program was generally very positive. First observation: these favorable returns are justified. Far from putting Dead to Me aside after the first thirty minutes of the show, we swallowed its first season in one go.

It's a dark comedy, funny and touching, sweet and bitter, carried by an excellent duo. Jen and Judy are perfect: they shine by their differences, but are also very accomplices on the screen. The improbable situations in which they find themselves are often funny and full of charm, even if Dead to Me is less light than what it foreshadowed.

The series is simple, sometimes a little conventional, but its scenario reserves some nice surprises. The cliffhangers are numerous and the suspense rather well orchestrated, so that we quickly get caught up in the game. We also appreciate the finely crafted dialogues which do not fall into the trap of banality.

The show is not without cynicism either. Its plot is built on a lie and we do not see how it could end well for the improbable duo of women. And yet, the twists and turns may well surprise you... In short, Dead to Me is a very nice series that we recommend without hesitation.
