Don't wait any longer Neil Blomkamp's Alien 5
byFrédéric PereiraSeptember 4, 2021
Neil Blomkamp returned to Alien 5 during an interview conducted by The Independent media. And according to him, we should no longer wait for this new component.
Alien will have marked a whole generation. Released for the first time in 1979, the first film was a real precursor in its time, thanks in particular to the work of Ridley Scott and Sigourney Weaver.
On the strength of this first success, a first sequel was produced in 1986, Alien le retour. With, this time, James Cameron at the controls. David Fincher then took up the torch with Alien 3, followed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and his Alien, the resurrection.
Alien 5 is not about to be released
Ridley Scott then returned, with two films that were highly criticized and poorly received by fans: Prometheus and Alien Covenant. If the latter were not lacking in interest, they probably did not go far enough and they certainly did not address the true role of the Xenomorphs.
To discover their true mission, it was indeed necessary to wait for the publication of the last volume of the comics devoted to the franchise.
Some of you may know this, but there was talk for a while of an Alien 5, and more specifically of a film whose production was initially to be entrusted to Neil Blomkamp. Unfortunately, the project never saw the light of day.
Still, there was a time when Fox was really considering funding it and there was even talk of calling Sigourney Weaver back to take on the role again. But in the end, she preferred to bet on Alien Covenant, with the result that we know.
Fox had to make a choice
Since then, of course, a few years have passed, but some fans continue to talk about Alien 5. And so it was during an interview conducted by The Independent that Neil Blomkamp returned to this question:
Neil Blomkamp has moved on
We therefore learn that Alien 5 and Alien Covenant have been in competition for a while at Fox. The studio therefore had the choice between producing a film with Sigourney Weaver in her leading role… or betting on a prequel following a film which had not completely convinced the fans. And against all odds, the choice fell on the second project.
Anyway, one thing seems certain. After Alien Covenant, there is little chance that a sequel will see the light of day. Not right away anyway. And if that were really the case, then we should not rely too much on Neil Blomkamp to achieve it. The latter seems to have definitively turned the page on this period of his life.
