Element, formerly known as Riot, is a free messaging and chat room client initially supporting the open Matrix protocol.

The company behind Element has just announced an offer containing bridges to the Signal, Whatsapp and Telegram protocols.

Note that these gateways are free and it is possible to run them on your own server. The offer is for those who have neither the time nor the inclination but are ready to pay $5 per month.

All of this is very good but I have a strange feeling of deja vu.

And for good reason, 20 years ago and until 2012, I administered an XMPP server which contained… gateways to other instant messaging protocols (ICQ, MSN, AIM…).

As a result, I am truly perplexed because I have the impression that, in this area, nothing has fundamentally changed. The majority proprietary solutions succeeded the majority proprietary solutions, the more exotic free solutions succeeded the more exotic free solutions with gateways to the majority solutions.

From IRC to Slack, from MSN to Whatsapp, from XMPP to Matrix, everything seems so similar. (except that, now, 99% of the population uses these tools from a computer in their pocket, connected everywhere and all the time).

So, in your opinion. What does not change? What is completely different? What will remain? What will change?
