Facebook will remove groups that repeatedly violate moderation rules

The social network has just announced that it will put in place new measures to supervise the groups on its platform. The latter are indeed regularly the subject of criticism, whether for racist publications, incitement to hatred and violence or even for the sharing of false information. From now on, groups that violate Facebook's Community Standards will receive a graduated response from the social network, with an outright banishment from the repeat offender group. Facebook va faire disparaître les groupes qui enfreignent les règles de modération de façon répétée

In its press release, Facebook indicates that the moderation rules relating to groups will be reinforced and tightened. A way for the social network to make its platform safer and more pleasant for all users. The new measures are intended “to combat the dissemination of harmful content, such as hate speech or false information. »

Graduated answers

Groups that violate the social network's community standards will have their visibility reduced. They will be less well referenced in search results and will no longer be recommended by Facebook. They will only be able to send a limited number of invitations and the posts of these groups will be less visible on the newsfeed of the people who are members of them.

Administrators and moderators of groups that have a significant number of users who have already violated the rules of the platform will have to approve their new posts for 30 days. “If an administrator repeatedly approves content that violates our rules, we will completely delete the group”, already warns Facebook.

The social network also indicates that members who have violated its rules several times will no longer be able to publish or comment on content in any group for a time. He will also not be able to invite other members or create a new group.

In the event of repeated infringements, Facebook gives itself the right to purely and simply delete the offending groups, but also the accounts of the users concerned.

Facebook will also ensure that each group has at least one active administrator in order to best manage discussions and publications on the groups.

The proliferation of fake news about the coronavirus, the pandemic, and vaccines on the platform over the past year has most certainly prompted Facebook to put these new measures in place. For months, the social network has been trying to suppress the false information circulating on these subjects. The US presidential elections also brought a lot of outbursts and abuse on Facebook which decided to take action and remove US anti-government groups.
