This tool is able to recognize an artist from a small sample of his work
Researchers have developed a new technique for identifying painting authors thanks to artificial intelligence. This could be used by art historians and help to distinguish the fraud from original works.
A simple sample of the work is enough
This new technology based on artificial intelligence makes it possible to distinguish brush strokes from different artists. This research has been led by researchers from the Western Reserve University in Cleveland. The project is different from most previous projects using artificial intelligence to verify the authenticity of a work.Indeed, researchers were generally based on high resolution images analysis. But this time, they are based on the topographic analysis of canvases.

An effective system
To prove the effectiveness of this new technique, the researchers have analyzed paintings carried out by students from the Cleveland Institute of Art.The latter were responsible for copying the photography of a water lily using brushes, paintings and identical canvases. After the surface analysis by a chromatic confocal optical profile, the automatic learning system was able to sort the works of the different artists with great precision.
Researchers are performing additional tests to assess the capacities of their artificial intelligence. They will notably analyze the portrait of Juan Pardo de Tavera d'El Greco (1609), which was damaged during the Spanish civil war before being restored by professionals.
